Simplicity in architecture is subjective to different people. Sometimes designing a simple building can be very complicated. When you want to design a simple building in terms of the form, but there are other problems that you need to solve. In words of Vittorio gregotti, “a simpler building can has an interior whose functions, spaces, uses and distributions are complex; an interior rich in interrelations rather than in form”. For example, a simple building might be bore, so you might want to put in thoughts into other aspect like spaces. The idea is minimalism. The more minimal it is, the harder for it to design.

A dwelling, which is my design project of semester 2.  A group of six with same philia will combine to form a miniature village. The village is situated in a sunken valley, an enveloped environment that gives a claustromania feeling. My role in the village is scavenger.

If I was asked if my design is simplicity or complexity, it’s simplicity. It was designed that focuses on the concept of simplicity and concentrates the inner feeling in order to represent the sensation of claustromania. A simple form of architecture can blend well into the natural surroundings. Simple form of architecture might not be simple, it might be complex. Concentrated facade is applied into the design too. It has fewer openings, thus emphasized on the main entrance. It has simple shapes conform to elementary geometry. Simplicity begins with a simple geometry shapes, but also to avoid using too many materials. Concrete is a simple material. I created enclosed spaces using concrete walls. I maintained the simplicity by limiting the types of material used, allowing the geometry to speak for the architecture. The spatial circulation is complex while maintaining the appearance of simplicity. The living space and working space are separated to keep clean. A wall in front of the entrance of the working space to prevent unpleasant view from outside and the odor.

I agree with the words of Vittorio Gregotti. “Simplicity should never be confused with simplification.”Simplicity requires considerable thought and effort. It is not easy to make something minimal yet not look bore. The composition of shape, opening, materials and elements must be right to enclose the space. The design of mine is good in simplicity.
