CLASS ASSIGNMENT 01

Vittorio Gregotti also stated before in the Philosophical Text, “simplicity, as a process of adhering to the essence of use, to lack of ornament, and to mimesis of the technical reproducibility and expressive rigor of utensils, has, as we know been the most prominent and common stylistic banner of modernity in this century. The form and shape of the building is designed base on the architecture vernacular study of the site, Jenjarom new village. To full utilize the natural ventilation created by the mother earth – wind, a maximize of open façade is design to let the winds flows through the whole building, by ensuring that every single spaces in the museum can be well ventilated with using the minimal artificial ventilating device such and air-conditioner.

In conclusion, “simplicity” is used as my design guide, meanwhile the historical meaningful story was applied~`

From my opinion, no matter simplicity or complexity is applied on the building design, the soul of the building must be there. It might base on any aspect for like mine, it is based on the historical story of the site, which mean more meaningful to me, and so I used it as a design guidance for this project.

The Regrowth of Memories. This is the most recent design project that i have been worked for. It is a museum that build to exhibit the value memorable items of Jenjarom.

The overall design idea is come from the historical background and the architecture vernacular study of the new village Jenjarom. Simplicity is applied to it but not simplification. It is more focus at its structural, practicality, and also aesthetic, in a simple way but not exuberant as the complex architecture.

During the emergency period, Chinese were forced to move to the new village which arranged by the British goverment directly after they have been inform. They were forced to leave their HOME where their memory were created and 'store', and move to a strange place which is totally mean empty for them, and build their new house over there. Therefore the center part of the museum is designed to be empty to represent this.

However, after they have move to the new village, they started to build their new HOUSE by their own pair of hands. There is where the memory of their new village life began. Therefore, a mango tree is planted at the center of the museum, to represent the 'growing' of their memory. Mango tree was chosen as it represent prosperity for Hokkien, who occupied the highest population in Jenjarom.

What I am try to bring out from my design can be explained as follow - “A simple building, in other words, rests on a principle of settlement as it does on its own physical foundation. It is the ability to clearly identify such foundations, including the connections with the earth and the geography that represent its history, that allows an architecture to achieve simplicity; that is, to become necessary in all its parts and connect itself directly to the principles of its own synthesis” by Vittorio Gregotti’s Philosophical Text.
