PROLOGUE

In today’s architecture, nature could play a lot of role in architecture but the role I’m talking today is that nature is use aas a design metaphor. One of the architect that uses nature as a design metaphor is Toyo Ito, all of his building mostly have a connection with the nature, the one I’m gonna talk about is Sendai Mediatheque.

Relating architecture to nature as an architecture student could be one of the most common thing we do in design, trying to integrate the nature with our design. Nature and architecture, it relates by maybe following the form of nature or maybe creating space with use of nature.

NATURE'S ROLE

Although the building form is just a simple form, but it won the grand prize of good design award 2001. The columns that Toyo Ito used is a new metaphor that is inspire by tree trunk, it is a repitition of steel that looks like a tree trunk. He said that he don’t want to create a big column that creates a feeling of suppressing the people and make them feel unease, meanwhile he saw that trees is a good spot for human to gather, with this he create a big column with just structural framing that allows people to gather there and feel comfortable.

From the front view you could see that the columns and the trees outside created a connection that the trees blend in to the building.

In my opinion, I feel like this method of creating a new methodology of column is very unique in terms that he uses nature as inspiration and mix this inspiration with architecture. It is like what  Marc-Antoine Laugier said“ It is the same in architecture as in all other arts: its principles are founded on simple nature, and nature's process clearly indicates its rules.”

He design the column in this way because he integrate also a bit of human figure in the column. What I know about Toyo Ito is that he always look for nature to create new design, although he doesn’t really care about the form. His main intention on this building is to create a feeling of having trees in the urban area because there is not much trees near the sendai mediatheque. Having people to feel the imaginary trees around them to create a connection with nature. For the highest floor, he design the roof in ways that it looks like the sheds of the trees protecting us.

CONCLUSION

In my opinion, I think that getting inspire by nature could help us in designing but we could not just literally follow what nature did. In architecture, I am always being taught that try to create something new in terms of material and space, because if we wanna have a connection with the nature we should understand and research more about them and feel so that we could use the correct material and create a space that could give a connection with the nature.
