CLASS ASSIGNMENT 01

Q.Select a recent design project on which you are working. Discuss the characteristics at the project in regards to simplicity and complexity. In light of the discussion and texts introduced today. What attitudes regarding simplicity and complexity does your work illustrate?

According to this question, the project that I wish to select to discuss the characteristics at the projects in regards to simplicity and complexity is my project on semester 2(Y1 Sem2). The reason that I choose this model to explain in this discussion is because of the model involved quite much of site analysis and consideration. The quotes I want to use is “simplicity is not simplification”.

From this model, it is actually made for tackle the problem of monophobia as stated in the assignment brief of sem 2.It require us to select an occupation(chef) with my group of members in the same criteria that is monophobia. As already known,monophobia is a symptom that scare to live alone, so we decided to build up our site with a garden which is in the middle and surrounded by us. Therefore, we will be able to meet each other in order to tackle monophobia.Since the site is already tackle the monophobia,so now I will futher explain about the simplicity that involving in my own dwelling.

From this picture, we can know that it is a contruction with less wall and I will be able to face to all of the direction without the blocking of the wall except the toilet. The reason that I want to build with less wall is because of I need to have some eye contact with my neighbour so I wont feel alone and guilty when I,m inside this dwelling, so this bring a meaning that it is a simple construction but a fulfil of consideration with each other of the villagers(not simplification).

The center of the ground floor is my personal working area as a chef, the problem of monophobia will be unable to tackle because the activity of cooking is just involving personally. So,I reduce the wall and add a selling counter in order to attract people so that they will come around me and I will not fill alone and guilty.Other than this, ground floor is also consists of a eating place and also a gathering place of villagers which is my group members. This enable us to come around visit each other and avoid the chances of getting alone.

The first floor is my personal place that consists of balcony and sleeping area. The wall of my sleeping room is transparent for vision purpose in order to get rid of loneliness. The balcony is a space that allow me to enjoy the view of the underneath so that won,t feel lonely.

In conclusion, this dwelling is a light construction building but it actually satisfy what client’s need and also meet the criteria of the quotes which is “simplicity is not simplification” due to few aspect:

-Light construction building but it is able to satisfy the requirement of the client

-A building is simple not just because it’s shape conform to elementary geometry

-Simple but functional

-Good architecture has always attempted to reduce problem
