The Characters Key Development and the relationship to the Three Act.

Student 5

The character Dr. Louise Banks in the movie ‘Arrival’ is a linguist, a lady who lecturing at a university, single and childless. Well then, after the 12 extraterrestrial spacecraft landed on the earth, this character plays a very important role as the US government believes that she has the ability to translate the aliens’ (Heptapods) language, due to she did a Farsi translation for the Intellengy two years ago. And yet she has been two years in the SSBI and still have the top secret clearance, she is recruit by the US government and is tasked with the unenviable responsibility of peacefully communicating with the Heptapods before the global violence eclipses the conservation. Louise is not the only person that recruited by the government for this, but also physicist Ian Donnelly to team together with her.

During the second attempt Louise makes contact with the Heptapods, she tries to discover their visual language as they fail to understand their spoken language, and she did. Louise breaks the boundary between her and the Heptapods by removing her safety clothing in front of them, to let them see her. Since then, the bonding and the relationship between Louise and the Heptapods getting closer, as they learning the language of each other. Trustworthy between them are formed.

Some scenes of her carrying baby, playing with a girl started appearing in her mind. It comes more frequently as she is getting known more and more about their language. In one of her flashforward, she mentioned that the father of her daughter is a physicist, this indicates that Ian will be her future husband. In her last and only direct contact with the one of the Heptapod, Costello told her that the reason they come to the earth is to help the humanity by sharing their language, which is a ‘’weapon’’ because it has the ability to change the mind’s perception of time.  And Louise is the only character in the movie that has the weapon.

Along with the explosive that planted by the U.S army in the extraterrestrial spacecraft, the rest of the world congress elected to take a more bellicose approach to the Heptapods, completely missing the truth of their benevolent mission. By this time, Louise has effectively had her mind rewired to speak the limitless language and breaks the boundaries of times. She becomes the Heptapods’ only hope.

The story flow and issues.

The story was not flow in a general way like how the other movies did. Instead, many clues are presented as Louise’s flashforwards without revealing its hidden truth until the end of the film. The director creates the chance of imaginations for the viewer to let them connects the story freely. This kind of story flow leads the viewer to understand the storyline in another more interesting ways.

However, until the end of the film, there are still some issues are not addressed. One of the most concerns one is that what would happen 3.000 years later? Is that really Ian will not comes back to her after he knew that she can foresee their daughter will dies due to cancer but still made the decision to have a her? What would make the Heptapods sake for humanity helps during that time? This makes the viewers look forward for the sequel of this film.
