THEORIES OF ARCHITECTURE DESIGN
Phenomenology of Place is manipulation of space, material, and light and shadow to create a memorable encounter through an impact on the human senses and to promotes the integration of sensory perception as a function of a built form. Phenomenology of place is considered as one of the important aspect when come in designing. This creates an experience that is beyond tangible, but rather abstract, observed and perceived.
Design Project

The project’s site is located in Balik Pulau, Penang. The objective of the project in current semester required us to design an artist village from an existing building. This has to be done through applying the concept of adaptive reuse into it. It is a place for artists to come together and exchange cultural and art, at the same time, the place also has to be part for the public used by integrating with the local site context. It is important that we create spaces that affect the users through physical senses but also mentally create a special experiencing.
The adaptive reuse concept is applied by preserving the structure of the building and use of local materials. The material I used is either timber or brick, so it looks like it is been there forever. The ground floor of the front part of building is basically open free plan. This is to encourage the wind circulation throughout the ground floor, allowing the visitors and users there enjoyed the breeze of natural air. In responsive to the local needs, a common space is introduced. The common space functions to connect local people together by promoting arts and crafts. A courtyard is created by removing the floor slab of lecture space and form a common space. Due to the layout of the building, the common space is shaded from sunlight. Meanwhile, there is a forest on the left of the building. One of my intentions is that building should blend into the environment. Thus, extend the green from the forest into the centre of the building which mimics the phenomenon. Along the side of the staircase to the upper floor are tied with steel wire structure which allows creeper plants to climb up. This acts as a boundary in between public and private zone.
In conclusion, “sense of place” has to do with the interchange between three essentials—location, landscape, and personal involvement. A building that somehow it just suitable on its placement on the site. We should also create an unique experience for the people visitor in place.
