THEORIES OF ARCHITECTURE DESIGN
PLACE-BASED OR PLACELESSNESS
Before there is phenomenology of place there is the phenomenology of architecture that breaks into 3 segment that is phenomenology of place, geometric and physical. What differentiate phenomenology of place with the other two that phenomenology of place is not measurable and is subjective in terms that is measure by one’s feeling. Phenomenology of place is more towards one that feel about the space. It can be material that affect one’s feeling or maybe light and shadow.

The project that I’m gonna talk about is my semester 3 project 3, that is a tribute to Jenjarom village. Why did I choose this project is because I like how architecture could create like a memory for people to remember what had happen in the past and still need to be keep. In designing the building for Jenjarom, I already have a thought of creating a building that is “Place-Based”. Why ? what if you build a skyscraper in Jenjarom, what it will create is tons of pressure to the villager and disrupt the harmonious village.
PROLOGUE

How would I say that my building is place-based? Let’s first go back to history of the village, there is 3 kind of generation in terms of houses in the village, from the first image we could see that the first generation is mostly covered by timber and partitions, the second image is the second generation that widely use of concrete and timber and lastly is the third generation with only use of concrete.

From my plan, I create a journey that brings the villager to experience 3 generation of material along the building, so from the space that is widely use in timber are office and the entrance because it’s like the village that we first found the first generation kind of house in jenjarom. From exhibition 1 to exhibition 2, I used a rhythmic kind of effect by using timber and to timber plus concrete to make them remember about the second generation. From exhibition 3 to the cafe and to the activity area, I used concrete to create the third generation kind to let the remember about all these small essence that is so important to them it create a symbol for Jenjarom.

From the elevation, I do not want to overwhelmed the whole village by giving pressure, so I used a very suitable height that follows the village to create a peaceful type of building. The height of the building does not overwhelmed the whole village in terms like it does not stand out too much but it blends in.

Blending in to Jenjarom, I think it is important to design the building in such way that It is place-based, place-based in terms of using the essence of the Jenjarom village to design my building. Designing a place-based building will create a harmonious feeling and will not give any pressure to the villager, like what Edward Relph say “The significance of place in human experience goes far deeper than this is apparent in the actions of individuals and group protecting their places against outside force of destruction”
