THEORIES OF ARCHITECTURE DESIGN
NATURE AND CONSTRUCTED II

Phenomenology of place is largely experienced by everyone that enters a space. Be it material, light or shadow, these aspects are just as likely to rekindle our place of origins. The other elements that could also do that is through geometrical and physical influence.

Largely reminiscent, my final project towards the start of my second year in architecture school requires us to design a museum for the Seri Kembangan "New Village".

It is with purpose we design a museum largely related to the current existing new village houses as to not overwhelm the antiquated design of the new village houses. Therefore there are many aspects that we have to involve in our design to imbue the sense of place into the museum we are designing.

We are also to preserve the local culture and to promote the diminishing culture, values and new village houses.
In order to achieve the aim set above, we first must allow ourselves to dwell in the village as the residents of the place. To feel the sense of place that has existed at the place for so long.

We first enrich ourselves with the local culture and practice, only then we are eligible to design a place and museum that is worthy of a proposal.
We follow with the existing geometrical features of the environment of the New Village. The physical aspects of the New Village's surrounding are also taken down for further studies.
The final proposal of the museum for the New Village is to preserve the image of the New Village as a whole, as the numbers of New Village houses are ever dwindling for different reasons, be it in search of higher living standard, renovation or make way for developments.

The museum also incorporates different elements of the village, translated into architectural elements such as light, shadow and material to evoke the sense of place, especially when the notion of the original village is diminishing is ever looming on the horizon.

To end my article, I hope I was successful in interpreting the sense of place of the New Village into the museum proposal, where I would like to quote “To dwell means to belong to a given space” by Christian Norburg-Shulz. The people from Seri Kembangan New Village may take solace from the evoked sense of belonging to the proposal.
