ORNAMENTATION

03rd Febraury 2017

In the ancient architecture, when the technology during the century has not allow the people to build a high building, people can only focus on what they were capable to do so to enhance the building aesthetic, which is adding a later of exuberance ornamentation on the outer layer of the building. During that time, the more exuberance the ornamentation of a building have, the more grandeur the building is. It represent the owner’s status, power, prestige, reputation. It is a representation, a symbol of status. At that time, their ornamentation are more focus one sculpture.  The carved patterns are usually affected by the local culture. For example, most of the Eastern countries will base on their mythology, and get inspiration to make sculpture like dragon or phoenix as ornamentations for their building, so that the whole building looks more magnificent. (Well, the dragon and phoenix pattern in the ancient times is only for the Royal Family.)

In contrast, most of the Western countries are inspired by the natural beauty – plant ecology. Large number of flowers and leaves sculpture brought out the temperament and solemn of a building.

The idea of “ Sculpture Ornamentation” has been maintained until the 18th century and decline gradually.

Industrial revolution. This occurred between 18th and 19th centuries. During this period, the contest between countries is no longer about the area, population nor their financial power, but science and technology. And in this magical period, many machines are created. And one of machines that bring the biggest contribution to architecture was created in that period – Elevator.

The creation of elevator is like making a key for architecture, a key for architecture to proceed to a brand new level. This make buildings are no longer subject to its human’s capability constraints, and able to began and accept a new challenge – height. In that era, the concept of the society is that the height of a building represent and symbolized the prosperity and wealth, the ability and technology. And because of this, the society begins to build skyscraper.  “Height” has already become the common goal for the worldwide architecture field. Until the 20th century.

In the 20th & 21st centuries, architects began to looks back and reuse to the previous concept of architecture – ornamentation. But they are not like remaking the sculpture and put it onto their cotemporary building project, but making used to the ‘ultimate meaning’ behind the ‘ornamentation’ – iconic. This is because people begin to realize that the challenge of making a unique building with organic form and shape is much greater than the challenge of making a skyscraper. So, architects begins to challenge unique and iconic building. One of the well know architect – Zaha Hadit was famous due to her amazing design. Architects no logger add ornamentation on the skin of the building, but the building itself is the ornament in the place.

Well, the concept of adding a layer of ornamentation on the skin of the building is still going on in this era. Some of the contemporary ornamentations are with functionality while some are not. For example: Have you ever thought about ‘’green wall’’ can be considered as ornamentation? Green wall not only enhance the aesthetic to the building exterior, but also producing CO2 and anion which helps to decrease the temperature of the surrounding and improve the quality of the air.

However, the ornamentation with no functionality also play a very important role in today’s society. For example, the Lion Head sculptor on the Sunway Pyramid shopping mall in Sunway City, Malaysia. The super symbolic lion head no doubt, has already become the landmark of the Sunway City. It, more or less boosts the human flows, development and economy of the place.
