THEORIES OF ARCHITECTURE DESIGN
The second public lecture was given by Charlie Sutherland with the title “BETWEEN DEFINITE AND INFINITE”, it is basically talk about a seies of introduction of his project and how he define the buiding as an architect. Charlie Sutherland started of his talk by introducing the becomings of his firm with his partner, and the interest and passion that lies within him. He state that we as an architect should have a certain principle (INFINITE) to architecture design, fashion comes and go, but principle should always be there. He is also states that every design should be a reason in it, to the site context or human behavior. In this talk he talks about a few things in architecture, route, urban landscape, massing, and materiality.
It began as a funded project by the Scottish Arts Council, to provide a leisure spot in the form of a structure for the island of Tiree. Sutherland’s proposal was designed with “Shelter” being the key in the design, imitating that of a pier, as it is placed nearby the seaside and being continuously horizontal despite of a decrease in slope along the landscape. Similar to that of a shelter to those who await ships to come by, though, is not to serve a shelter for travelers waiting for the ferry, instead it acts as a protection for its users against elements while simultaneously allowing them to experience exposure to them. Charlie Sutherland also stated that we must fully utilize the architecture and the landscape of the site as a tool to complement the surrounding.

White walls provide the view to the sky while covering the occupants from the harsh sea and land breeze throughout the day, and the Bridge segment provides seamless views to the beach and sand below the structure whilst covering the occupants from the sky and the winds. Whereas the Glass box being the end of the structure, provides all of the above traits, and a endless panoramic view out to the sea. Reflect. as the season that constantly change through out the year, he design using white solid walls, it allow the light and the sky reflect to the wall. The user get to experience as the season changes. He also that open to the sky feel connect the the sky and for a better experience.
In the talk, Charlie Sutherland explaining about the importance of materiality. He is always trying to maximize the functionality of materials not only for basic purpose but also the meaning behind of it.

The site of this modest little cottage is located at the shore of Lake Windermere on a steeply sloping wooded copse by the edge of Cunsey Village. The materials that used for the building are synchronize with the site context which is the surrounding woodland. The house is not consider a green building that can fit together with the site context but because the material used, the building looks like in sympathy to the site. The main body of the building is clad in vertical timber boarding. Natural larch panels and glazing are contained within this frame. A sedum roof is used both for environmental stability internally and to reduce the carbon footprint of the building.
In the Q&A session, he said that material is the best honest expression of an architecture, and they speak a voice for the building and express something beyond texture and visual expression.
