      ROPORTION & ORGANISATION

Let introduce Ar. Charlie Sutherland Biography first. He studied architecture at Mackintosh School in Glasgow. After he graduated, he was hired by Sir James Stirling and have been worked with a number of international commissions and competitions which includes the Tokyo Forum, The Temasek Polytechnic Singapore etc.

In the year of 1997, he establish his own architect firm, which name Sutherland Hussey Architects, along with his long term colleague. Their projects actually brought them number of award winning over UK.

He is an architect that very concern about the site context and like to fully implement and utilize them in his building.

He presented some of his project, and what catches my intention the most is this – An Turas Tiree.

Though his talk, we know that what An Turas mean is “The Journey”. This Building separated into 3 parts.

First Part-

The White Walls

First is the white wall. Among the 3 parts, I personally like this part the most. Two pieces of white walls that form a narrow walk way for visitor to experience the beauty of the site. The wall has blocks the left and right vision of visitors, resulted the vision of visitor can be only focus at the front and what’s above- the sky. The natural beauty of the sky and the wall that painted with pure white create a big contrast for visitors. This created a different way of focal point for visitors.

Second Part-

The Bridge

After passing by the white wall, visitor will be entering the second part of the building, - The Bridge. Well, while visitors are walking along this bridge, the view at their front is actually the biggest “lure” for them to walk forward, as what they can see is only the front. The block of left right bottom and top vision makes what is at the front even more mystery and fascinating. However, the louver kind of opening which is located below the eye level create a senses of mystery and visitors cannot really see what is behind the opening but the light from outside is penetrating in from there.

Last Part-

The Glass Box

Lastly,- The Glass Box. A cubical space with covered by fully transparent glass, provided shelter from wind and sound, but not vision. When standing at this point, visitor can enjoy the view of the site without any restriction.
